Obama Signs Alzhiemer's ActIn January, the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) was signed into law by the President, after unanimously passing in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The NAPA will create a national strategic plan to address and overcome the crisis of Alzheimer’s.
NAPA is the largest legislative victory for the Alzheimer’s cause in many years. The main voice behind the legislation is the Alzheimer’s Association. Advocates really helped get NAPA through.
NAPA will create a coordinated plan that functions on the national level that aimed at coordinating and evaluating national efforts in Alzhemier’s research, clinical care, institutional, and home- and community-based programs and outcomes.
Here are a few facts about NAPA to help you understand more about it:
• The strategic framework will include outcome-driven objectives, recommendations, implementation steps, and accountability in the fight to overcome Alzheimer’s.
• The law requires an annually updated national plan submitted to congress; annual recommendations for priority actions to improve health outcomes and lower costs; annual evaluation of federally funded efforts; and the creation of an Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services.
• The Advisory Council will coordinate federal agencies involved with Alzheimer’s care, services and research, and will allow participation by patient advocates, health care providers, state health departments, Alzheimer’s researchers, and health associations.
