New Guidelines Have Been Released for Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Accelerating scientific discovery has sharpened our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease. In response to the pace of insight, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Alzheimer’s Association convened three workgroups to explore the need for new diagnostic criteria that reflect the full clinical continuum of the disease from its earliest effects to its eventual impact on mental and physical function. The new guidelines, revised to reflect input from the professional community at large, are now published as free-access papers in Alzheimer’s and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association and are available as PDFs here.

Upcoming Support Group Meetings:
Saturday, March 12th, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Encore Senior Village in Phoenix
Thursday, March 17th, 2011 at 6 p.m. at Encore Senior Village in Peoria

Friends and family dealing with the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and related memory impairments gather each month to offer support at both Encore Senior Village communities.

Each month, family members, friends and those seeking help gather at Encore Senior Village to ask questions, share experiences, and learn about resources, and educational opportunities as they cope with the diagnosis of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other related memory impairments. At the end of each support group meeting there is a sense of renewed hope and optimism on the part of participants. Members feel like they have both helped someone else and learned in the process. These meetings are open to the public, so please feel free to attend a support group when your schedule permits.

Dementia patients’ artwork auctioned in Paradise Valley

The Arizona Republic
On Fridays, Alzheimer’s and dementia patients at Encore Senior Village in Paradise Valley gather to share the joy of art.
Using brushes and their imagination, the patients create watercolor paintings.
“The creativity of the artists illustrates that quality of life can be experienced and expressed at all stages of life and in all circumstances,” said Peggy Ulland, executive director of Encore Senior Village. Seventeen of the center’s patients created 42 pieces for an art auction held last week.

Donating Comfort

Encore Senior Village residents to donate 20 teddy bears to KDKB-FM for the Arizona Highway Patrol Association

Kids need comfort in upsetting situations. And the Arizona Highway Patrol Association, KDKB-FM and Encore Senior Village are teaming up to make a difference for kids in Phoenix.

Encore Senior Village, located in Phoenix, is a specialized memory care community for residents with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or related memory impairments. Encore’s nationally respected and innovative Rediscovery™ Program offers resident’s ways to “rediscover” everyday activities.

Twenty residents at Encore Senior Village recently participated in the travelling “Stuff-N-Fluff” Animal Workshop, building 20 distinctive and individual teddy bears to reflect their life experiences. At the end of the workshop, the residents were able to choose whether they wanted to keep their bear or donate it to a child in need.

All 20 residents elected to donate their teddy bears to the Comfort Bear Program administered by KDKB-FM (93.3). The residents will be giving the teddy bears to KDKB-FM on Wednesday, July 15th.

This community service event was a rewarding experience for the residents, who are thrilled with their ability to help and contribute to the Phoenix community.
