The popularity of electric bicycles is growing steadily. For example, the Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy (KiM) calculated last year in the ‘Bicycle Facts’ survey that three out of ten two-wheelers sold are e-bikes. Almost half of all kilometers driven with such a bicycle is covered by people over 65.

A little later last year, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) calculated that a quarter of all cyclists who died in traffic cycled on an e-bike. Most victims are the elderly. Yet an electric bicycle is not in itself more dangerous than the regular variant, write the researchers from the first study. “The number of road casualties among e-cyclists is mainly due to the fact that older people cycle more: a group that has a relatively high risk of a bicycle accident and is relatively vulnerable if they have an accident.”

Now that the season is starting again, there are initiatives in various municipalities to increase the cycling safety of the elderly. In Veendam, for example, the sports consultant Seniors of the municipality, together with Verkeerswijzer Groningen, is organizing a bicycle clinic specifically for people over 65 . Keeping fit and safe especially excellent airflow during a long ride cycling is the goal. Participants are presented with a presentation about safety, with practical and theoretical information at the center. The skill is then trained on a dedicated circuit. Residents bring their own e-bike to practice, but also normal bicycles and tricycles are welcome. Participants pay two euros per cyclist. There are similar clinics in other municipalities in Groningen.

Cycling Day in Front of the Town Hall
With its electric cycling day, the municipality of Lansingerland focuses on people over 50 . The day is organized by a consultancy in the field of home and living environment. The destination is the town hall. Here about forty people over 50 increase their cycling skills with the e-bike. Also with practical tips to minimize the chance of an accident. There is also room for testing different types. Just like driving a course, performing balance and reaction tests under the guidance of an expert and adjusting the bicycles for a good sitting posture and saddle height. The day ends with a joint trip through the municipality.

Bicycle Parties
Various municipalities offer their residents the opportunity to participate in ‘Cycling parties for seniors’ of the Fietsersbond. This includes the e-bike. Woudenberg is one of the participating municipalities. In cooperation with the province of Utrecht, the municipality offers residents of 60 years and older the ‘Tips for Longer Cycling Fun’ training course through the bicycle school of the federation.
