Holidays are filled with opportunities for togetherness, sharing, laughter and memories. But holidays can also be filled with stress and disappointment when a loved one is experiencing memory impairments. Because of the changes he or she has experienced, a person with memory impairments may feel confused and/or irritable during visits from family and friends. Old traditions, customs and ways of celebrating may need to give way to a gentler and quieter environment. Here are some visiting tips for the holidays:

• Celebrate early in the day, have holiday lunches rather than dinners to reduce fatigue and restlessness.

• Try not to have too many people visit at once that way the conversation is easy to follow and allows more interaction with family.

• Bring things to share with your loved one. Examples may include; photographs, holiday treats, fun movies or stories to read to them.

We look forward to visiting with you this holiday season!
